3-State Injury Update

The 2006 3-State 3-Mountain Challenge was a huge success. 2000 riders had a wonderful and rewarding ride.

However, as with all events of this magnitude and risk, there were some injuries - one very serious. I realize that there were several other accidents along the way but this is the ones that you are asking about.

Scott Boyd - Suck Creek Mountain

As most of you know there was a serious accident on Suck Creek Mountain. The cyclist, Scott Boyd, is a member of the Harpeth Bike club and a physician at Vanderbilt. He is the Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Thanks so much to Carlton Davis for providing us with these updates on Scott.

May 15, 2006 - Update from Carlton Davis

Just got back from seeing Scott at Vanderbilt. He is now in a private room in the trauma unit.

When I arrived I had to wait in the hall while I was told he was being assisted from his chair back to the bed.

I got in to see him and he was awake recognized me immediately. He extended his hand in greeting. I spoke to him briefly, but he quickly drifted off to sleep. He seemed tired but looked great. He still can't speak as he has a treach tube. Cathy, his wife, said that not being able to speak has been frustration for him. They hope to remove the tube (or at least get a smaller one) in the next few days. He is off the ventilator now.

I got to speak with Dr. John Morris, the head of the trauma department and a personal friend of Scott's. He said that Scott is ahead of schedule and they are hoping to move him into rehab at Stallworth by the end of the week.

He said they are going to treat him like an athlete and get him tired, then let him recover. Dr. Morris seemed to he happy with the progress Scott is making.

It was a so good to see him awake, responsive and looking so much
better.

May 18, 2006 - Update from Carlton Davis

I went by to see Scott today in the trauma unit of Vanderbilt. Luckily he was awake and looking even better than last time I saw him. Best of all, he has a smaller treach tube and could speak.

And speak he did. We (mostly he) talked for about 10 minutes about his progress, the weather, the end of school for the kids, and of course, cycling. I heard that they even had him up and walking a little yesterday.

Cathy wasn't there, but Scott confirmed the plan for him to move into rehab at Stallworth soon.

More good news to come.

May 30, 2006 - Update from Carlton Davis

He was home on Sunday for a visit. Coming home for good on Wednesday, May 31.

He is steadily improving mentally and physically. A full recovery is expected, but it is going to take a little time still. I know he has lost some weight while in the hospital. He is starting to eat better. I'm sure that returning home will aid his recovery in a number of ways.

Thanks again for your interest and concern.

Carlton

Please keep Scott in your thoughts and prayers.

Carlton,

Scott Boyd came to my 5:45 spin class tonight! I was so excited to see
him too. He seemed to ride effortlessly. We talked for 20 minutes after
class. (quite the chatty fellow too)  He looks to be healing nicely and notes
that he's obeying doctors and his colleagues to take it easy and ease
back into cycling slowly. He is amazing and he and I agree he is a
walking testimony to the power of prayer.

Thought you would like to know.

Hi Daisy,

I just got off the phone with Scott Boyd, the Rider who was injured so severely in this year's 3 State.  I had sent him a couple of cards over the past several weeks on behalf of the club, just to let him know the Cycling Community here in Chattanooga had him in thoughts and prayers as he recovered.  Mutual friends in the Nashville area had been giving sporadic updates on his recovery to folks in the club, so we all knew he was making progress and were of course grateful for that.

He called me to thank the Chattanooga Cycling Community for all the support that has been offered, and to let us know he is well on his way to full recovery!

Scott's injuries were very grave initially.  He told me he remembers climbing Suck Creek and feeling really good about the Ride and the way he was riding….next thing he remembers is waking up in Vanderbilt Hospital 8 days later…. Scott was hospitalized for several weeks.  He is at home now, and still rehabbing.  His Doctors tell him he is "nearing full recovery in near record time".  Scott himself is a Surgeon, and has undergone extensive testing in addition to his rehab work.  He is being told there is "ZERO evidence"  of any deficit.  He is planning to return to work this month, and hoping to return to Surgery by September.

He has been spinning (indoor spin class) almost every day and can't wait to get back on the bike. (BTW, his Bike suffered a damaged rear wheel, but other than that is OK!)

His recovery has been truly remarkable.  He gives a lot of credit for that to the excellent and prompt response by Medical Personnel.  He commented that "you guys were really prepared", and that, while one hopes to never have to deal with such a situation, being prepared "just in case" can make all the difference.  Scott had only nice things to say about our Event, and about the Chattanooga Community.

Scott repeated emphasized how very blessed he feels, and his desire to pass appreciation on to the Cycling Community in Chattanooga.  He is a truly nice guy (well DUH…he IS a CYCLIST!!!!)

I assured him we will continue to remember him, and will rejoice with him when we see him next year at Three-State!

Please pass this on to the club.

Thanks!

Amy French
